I have an iPhone 6s that I am replacing with an iPhone 8. Should I transfer the 6s SIM card which is a 4G or find out how to activate the SIM card that came with the iPhone 8 which is a 5G? How do I do this and retain my current cell phone number?

I have an iPhone 6s that is being replaced by an iPhone 8 through the insurance offered by my cellular carrier. The iPhone 8 came with a 5G SIM card. Should I transfer my iPhone 6s SIM card (which is a 4G) to the iPhone 8 or somehow get my phone number transferred to the new SIM card.

I know this must be possible for those who have lost their phones and replace them keeping their same phone number. In fact, I do not ever recall changing a SIM card before but it has been years since I have had a new phone.

iPhone 6s, iOS 14

Hello there P2Officecat1,

Your iPhone 6s comes with a Nano-SIM card. You can use the same SIM card in an iPhone 8.

Learn which size SIM card your iPhone or iPad uses

To use 5G, you'll need the following:

  1. An iPhone 13 model or iPhone 12 model.
  2. A carrier that supports 5G.
  3. A 5G cellular plan

Use 5G with your iPhone

As for what that specific SIM card will support, you'd need to contact your wireless carrier that originally provided that SIM card. In most cases, if they do need to give you a new one, it would still be linked to the same phone number. However your carrier is the best place to start for help with that.

Take care.
