Tab key in Pages

When I press the tab key while using pages, the focus changes to the next row or column in a table.

What I want to happen is to have the cursor jump to the next tab stop.

In other words, I would like normal tab key behavior.

How do I do this?

I can do the following in my Pages '09. I hope this will work for you.

  1. Put the insertion point in a cell.
  2. Put a tab stop on the ruler, or you can use the default tab stops.
  3. Press Option + Tab to move the insertion point to the tab stop.

This works for only one cell at a time.

You will have to enter a marker character (e.g. X) in the cell (formatted as Text) instead of a tab, then with Find/Replace (deselect whole words and Match case), you can locate that marker character, and replace it with a tab (\t). Pages monitors your keystrokes and when you enter a tab while in a table, that tells it to advance to another cell. You cannot change that behavior when you enter a tab, and a tab behaves the same way in Excel 16.58 and LibreOffice Calc 7.3.

"Normal" tab key behaviour in a table is to jump to the next column.

"Tab" is the short name for "Tabular." The original purpose of Tab stops and the associated Tab key on a typewriter was to enable type to be placed in columns to form a tabular layout without eye-balling the alignment and adjusting it with the space bar.

'Tab stops' within cells are not supported. By default, text within a cell is aligned to the left boundary of a cell; numbers and quasi number values (eg. date and time values) are aligned to the right boundary of a cell.

You can override these default settings for individual cells or for groups of cells by selecting the cell(s) then using the Text pane of the Format Inspector.
