M1 MacBook Air External Display Not Working

Hey everyone!

I bought a M1 MacBook Air last summer and have been experiencing some issues connecting to external displays. On my previous monitor – Samsung 27” C27JG5x – when using HDMI the display would show white noise after changing the input back to the Mac. Switching to DisplayPort completely fixed this issue. I was using the Anker PowerExpand 11-in-1 USB-C PD Hub (A8385HA1-5).

Now with an Asus ROG XG27UQR display and the same USB-C hub HDMI is still finnicky, now the monitor doesn’t always see the Mac and sometimes the image is messed up but not necessarily in consistent ways. At one point it displayed white noise, see attached image. Often the monitor would say there is no signal, even though the Mac acts as though there’s a second screen connected, and occasionally the screen will flicker only to go back to being non-responsive. I have tried multiple cables and adapters and keep having the same issue.

I have also tried using the DisplayPort connector on the hub with two different cables and both DisplayPorts on the monitor and while the Mac acted as though there was a display connected, the monitor did not see the Air.

So far, I can get the MacBook to output an image to the external display only through HDMI, but it often required a lot of patience and disconnecting and reconnecting cables. I use the display with both a Nintendo Switch and PS5 and both those devices work perfectly.

Any advice?
