en0 does not exist - no internet?

MacBook Air 2017 (intel T2) Monterey

I have intermittent loss of internet, both wi-fi and Ethernet. Sometimes it works, sometimes Wi-fi Sybil on menu has a line through it, sometimes an exclamation point. If I try to turn it on nothing changes.

Thunderbolt Bridge to Ethernet sometimes works, sometimes not.

I have changed order of interface in left side of Network Prefs, deleted Wi-fi, TBridge and made new ones. Now, however, if WiFi is at top of interface list and exclamation point shows in menu bar WiFi symbol, Network Prefs crashes as it opens (“There was an error” or similar generic message).

If TBridge is top of list and I try to make a new WiFi interface, there is none offered on drop down menu.

I have deleted Plists, reset PRAM etc, opened in Recovery, reloaded the whole system (Monterey), tried terminal code ‘Sufi ifconfig … ‘ etc.

As I said, sometimes it just works so I’ve thought it was a big but now am suspicious it might be a hardware issue.

Please, I need to get on with my work not spend every day thinking am about to fix it, then not! So if anyone has any thoughts please let me know.

Thank you.🙏

Normally, Apple Diagnostics is run off the system drive ... unless that drive was completely erased. Then, as you already know, it can only be accessed via the Internet, using the <option><D> key combo. This, unfortunately, will not work in this situation.

Based on what you have provided, it does appear to be an issue with your Macs logic board and I can only suggest that you make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them check it out and provide you with your options. Alternatively, you can contact Apple Support directly by simply selecting the "Get Support" link in the upper right-hand side of this forum's web page. Good luck!

Ok, thanks for the EtreCheck report. After giving it a look, here are some observations/recommendations:

  • Launch Daemons:
    • [Loaded] com.mackeeper.AdwareAnalyzer.AdwareAnalyzerPrivilegedHelper.plist
    • [Other] com.mackeeper.AntiVirus.plist (? 4142c8d3 - installed 2020-10-06)
    • Recommendation: Completely remove MacKeeper and all of its components.
  • User Login Items:
    • Recommendation: Completely remove CleanMyMac and its components.
  • Clean up:
    • Recommendation: I suggest that you remove the items identified in this section.
  • Diagnostics Information:
    • Observations: Your Mac has had a number of application/process crashes within the last 30 days. However, none of the ones noted would I suspect as being the culprit for the networking issue.

Based on my experience, using "cleaner" apps, like MacKeeper, cause more issues than resolve them and we see numerous posts here from folks asking for help to remove them. Starting with a "clean" system would be my suggested next step. I know you have already done so, but I would strongly suggest doing so again, but this time, do not restore your data. Try using your Mac for a day or two to see if it still exhibits networking issues. If it does, then hardware is the most likely culprit.

Also, I forgot to ask. What is the make & model of the wireless router are you using? You posted in the Apple AirPort section, but if you not using one of these router, I will ask to have this post moved to the MacBook Air section of the ASC where it can gather additional attention that it deserves.

Yep, it happens to both Ethernet and WiFi (en0 and en1).

Started happening a while ago, around the time we got a new router Asus ax3000 dual

band. Some settings were wrong on that and affected all devices for a while as it switched between 2.4 and 5ghz. Can’t tell if something like that would affect MBA’s internal workings long term, though.

I erased hard drive and reinstalled Monterey yesterday hoping it would get rid of the bug, but no change.

Haven’t been able to use Apple Diagnostics - it requires internet, as do wireless utility and airport utility - none of which have shown anything useful - especially since when they’re working, I have internet so it says everything’s normal.

If I look at System Info when I have internet it shows details of internet hardware. If I look at it when no internet, it shows only basic built-in MBA system WiFi info.

So, sometimes it thinks it has WiFi capability, other times it’s not recognizing the hardware.

Does that then make it a hardware or a software issue?

Thank you for your thoughts.
