When I try to save an XL program the computer asked me to change the name and it wouldn’t let me exit until I tried. When I did the program disappeared. None of my word programs were lost but the XL program wise.

Saying "XL" and "Word", I assume you mean user data files created using the Excel and Word apps.
If you mean rename an Excel file, you'll need to look for the new name. Your can search using an Excel file extension or partial name via Spotlight
