Get “Couldn’t import spreadsheet An error occurred” with only an OK option & no other explanation. This happens no matter where the file is stored—on iCloud or on my iPhone 11.

That's is very 'old' Excel version.
With which app are you trying to open that file? MS Excel app from the App Store?

Our Club membership chairman is willing to use later Excel formats but we want the files he posts to be accessible to the most users. That’s why some time ago we tried 97-2004 as a “lowest common denominator.” It may be that we’re shooting too low.
I am simply trying to take a downloaded .xls file and open it in Numbers. Do you or any community members reading this know what is the “oldest” Excel format Numbers can read?
