Mini won't react to "Hey Siri"

** ON SAME NETWORK, HEY SIRI IS TOGGLED ON.

I just purchased this and am having nothing but frustration. I set it up yesterday, "hey siri" worked (finally) when I added an alarm. A couple min later I asked when my alarm was and nothing... no response was showing in Home app. I could not get it working. I reset it today, showed downloading in Home- then normal looking icon. Set a media alarm.

NOTHING again. All my products are Apple, but I also have Google Home and those were so freaking easy to setup. What am I doing wrong here?
