Table of contents not showing up in the sidebar in Pages

Same issue as discussed in this question, which is unresolved. I can insert a table of contents into the text of my document, but when I try to view it in the sidebar, I get the following message: "use paragraph styles in your document to populate the table of contents." I have used paragraph styles, which are reflected in the table of contents I can insert. There is no edit button in the sidebar to click and change selected styles, as there normally is.

Hi Fzzle_,

To edit your table of content from the sidebar, make that you have selected  the View menu button in the toolbar, then choose Table of Contents.

To change the TOC entries, click Edit at the top of the sidebar, then do any of the following:
Change which paragraph styles are enabled: Select the checkbox next to the paragraph styles you want to include.
Change the indentation of entries: Click the indent or outdent button to the right of a selected style. If a button is dimmed, you can’t move the entry in that direction.
To change the sidebar view or close the sidebar, click the View menu button, then choose Page Thumbnails or Document Only.

Find this and additional details in Create a table of contents in Pages on Mac.

Regards.

Fzzle has very clearly described this still unresolved issue, and it's becoming really frustrating. Please, please, please do NOT suggest merely selecting Table of Contents from View in the Toolbar, as Fzzle has very clearly done this and still no TOC entries are shown AND no Edit button is available in the upper right corner of the TOC Sidebar to select the Paragraph Styles to include in the TOC. I am experiencing this same issue and it's becoming a real problem. And YES my document (as is Fzzle's) contains and is using Paragraph styles.

I have a similar question. The default in TOC is for the first level headings to be included, but not the second (or lower). I only see the 1st level headings in the sidebar and THERE IS NO EDIT BUTTON. Inserting a TOC in the doc and selecting diffrerent paragraph styles to be included works in the TOC in the document (which I don't actually want) but changes nothing in the side bar, which is what I want. I use it to jump around my doc like bookmarks. Not being able to edit the sidebar TOC is super annoying. I've tried closing down Pages, restarting the computer, etc, it makes no difference. It seems that when it's not going to work for a particular file, it will never work for that file, even though the edit button appears and works fine in other Pages files. PLEASE FIX.
