My Favorites folders disappear. Can someone explain why this is happening?

This is rather annoying because I'm sure this is not supposed to be happening. I had several folders in that 'Favorites' column and today while aorking on a doc, I went to save > got a message that the document didn't exist > then my folders disappeared. What the heck is going on?

Hi Russss,

When checking Finder > Preferences, are you seeing the folder listed, or add favorites from the list?

Change Finder preferences on Mac

If this was an iCloud folder.

"On your Mac

You can find your Desktop and Documents folders in the iCloud section of the Finder sidebar. If you add a second Mac Desktop, you can find those files in the Desktop folder in iCloud Drive. Look for a folder with the same name as your second Mac. You can also use Spotlight to search for specific file names. "

Those steps can be found here: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive

Missing folders is odd, test booting to safe mode and checking for the file and folder again as well.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

"Intel processor

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

If you use Time Machine check for local snapshots for your information as well. About Time Machine local snapshots

Cheers.

Hmm, I did forget about checking my Finder Preferences. There were some 'selections' there NOT selected that I know I had selected some time ago.

As for missing folders, here's my current screenshot (below) of what I have moved into that left column. I've done this a couple of times now. Those folders under the iCloud Drive have disappeared on me. Also when this happened while working on a document, going to save said document I get a message in the title bar area that the document doesn't exist. My initial guess here is that my internet connection could be the culprit.

Anyway, thank you for your time to respond back.

Russss...,

Thanks for those details. So everything for iCloud is set up correctly. When the iCloud folders disappear, does it seem to happen at a certain interval? Like once a day they disappear from finder? Or is it just completely random?

In regards to saving things to those folders, do you get this "document doesn't exist" message when trying to save something in all of those folders, or is it just coming up with a specific one?

You also mentioned earlier about the issue coming from your internet connection. Is the internet connection not working on your computer? Are you able to load a website in Safari for example?

Cheers!

When my iCloud folders disappeared the timing was random.

When saving the document, it was to a specific folder. But the folders had disappeared when this message popped up. This is partly why I thought it might be linked to my internet connection. The connection has been working though can be painfully slow at times. I received a new modem/router from Frontier not too long ago and haven't noticed any interruptions like before.

Web pages do load though the behavior is hit & miss. Some pages pop right up while sometimes I have to wait.

And as an added bonus I do get the spinning beachball while using any app. This is quite annoying.
