renaming folder

Is it a folder you created? Restart and try again. If still doesn't work, boot into Safe Mode and try: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

If this is a folder that you previously created, then control-click (or if configured, two-finger tap) on that folder to open the secondary menu and choose Rename. You can then simply type in the new folder name and press return.
