Can I use Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter with Airpod Max?

Can I use the Apple adapter with a standard stereo 3.5 mm cable or must I buy the lightning to 3.5mm Audio cable to connect the Max to an audio source?

If the Audio source has a 3.5mm Headphone jack and not a Lightning port then you need the Lightning to male 3.5mm jack cable.

The regular Lightning to 3.5mm adapter does not work in the other direction.
