Magic keyboard volume not working on macbook pro 13 (2019))

Few weeks ago I got a Magic Keyboard keyboard for my macbook pro 13 (2019) with macOs Catalina on it.

Unfortunately, volume buttons (or any other functions) are not working. All advises I see are about either reset or going into Keyboard config to adjust function keys.

The problem is that when I go to Keyboard - I can only configure my macbook's built in keyboard - and since my macbook has touchbar - those configs do nothing for the magic keyboard.

Basically the question is how to enable volume keys for magic keyboard when paired with a macbook pro with a touch bar?

thanks

Hello MakBooc-user,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

Please use these steps to make sure your Magic Keyboard is correctly paired to your Mac to help get the buttons working:

"Follow these steps to set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad:

  1. Connect a Lightning to USB Cable1 or a USB-C to Lightning Cable to the Lightning port on the device2 and connect the other end of the cable to your Mac.
  2. Make sure that the device's power switch is in the ON position. (Green is visible under the switch when the device is on.)
  3. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth to open the Bluetooth preferences window. When the device pairs with your Mac, it appears in the list of devices.
  4. Check the Bluetooth preferences window to see your device's charge level. When the device is charged, unplug it for wireless use."

If the issue remains, make sure your software is working as expected by installing all pending updates.

You might also try pairing your keyboard to another Mac to see if the same thing happens.

We hope this helps get the volume buttons working as expected.

Cheers!

Hi there MakBooc-user,

It sounds like the one 'currently in use' is the one built-in to your MacBook Pro.

Are we correct in understanding that the settings for your external keyboard aren't showing, even when plugging it into your Mac?

Does it show in your Bluetooth settings? We provided this link earlier, but wanted to provide it again just in case: Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad with your Mac

Which macOS Catalina version number is currently installed, and are there any issues with pairing your keyboard with another Mac(if you're able to test this)?

Cheers!

Hey MakBooc-user,

If you use the "fn" key along with the volume key, does it then work?

Use standard function keys
Standard function keys work differently depending on the app and the keyboard shortcuts that you've set up. Some apps have their own keyboard shortcut preferences that you can customize.
To use the standard function keys, hold the Function (Fn)/Globe key  when pressing a function key. For example, pressing both Fn and F12 (speaker icon) performs the action assigned to the F12 key instead of raising the volume of your speakers.
If your keyboard doesn’t have an Fn key, try pressing and holding the Control key when pressing a function key.

If not, and following these steps is not working as expected:

Change the default function key behavior
If you want to change the top row of keys to work as standard function keys without holding the Fn key, follow these steps:
1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
2. Click Keyboard.
3. Select "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys".

Then, the next step is to contact Apple Support so they can take a look at what's happening:

The above information is from this article: How to use the function keys on your Mac

Take care!

Hi Karina(184)

what does it mean - "current keyboard in use"? - my macbook is open on a stand with magic keyboard connected (tried with and without cable; disconnect and reconnect back with and without cable as well - basically all combinations), so both of my keyboards are "current" - for example, this post, I typed some letters on magic keyboard and some on laptops one

Hi

I don't have another mac to try - maybe will be able to do that later.

and, yes, the only keyboard I see there is the built in one - there are controls for the touch bar; I even tried to connect an external monitor and closed the laptop - still the only kb I see is the built in one.

And I see the magic keyboard in bluetooth settings, in fact, I am typing this comment from it.

The version of macos I have is 10.15.7

thanks
