Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter not working on Macbook Pro

I have now bought 4 of these. Latest two from Apple. The last two work on the iPad, the former two worked nowhere. None of them work on the MacBook Pro, though it is on the list of compatible devices (15", 2017)

If you're from APPLE, PLEASE don't patronize me with the pat advice of trying different headphones/devices etc. I have. You sell a product that is not working. Please notify the tech dept. It's only $9, but if you are not giving us a jack, then you should be providing dongles that work, whatever the price. Thank you!

Why would I need a dongle if the jack was working? And why should it be ok if it is not working when the product page lists it as compatible? This constant tendency to simply assume user error when the problem is with the product is deeply inappropriate. I realize you were trying to help, but it happens with every single question you read on this site. Look at how many are reporting this problem before assuming user error or ignorance. Thanks!

PS It is also not working in the car. And yes, I checked every cable involved. The cable works fine for my Android phone, not when connected through the adaptor to the iPad in the car.
