My iPad is on iOS 12.5.5 and says it is up to date. How can I get later versions?

I want to get up to date software on my iPad Air. It says it is up to date but is 12.5.5

The iPad Air 1st generation is not compatible with more recent versions of iOS/iPadOS. The latest version compatible with your device is indeed iOS 12.5.5.

An unit running 12.5.5 isn't capable of 13 or above; for an iPad Air, it's a first generation model.
