UPDATE: I was finally successful in upgrading my iPhone 6s Plus to iOS 15.3.1. I connected the iPhone to my pc (Windows 7 running iTunes version 12.10.11.2). I reset the iPhone (erase all content and settings). When it completed and appeared in iTunes, I selected restore and restored from a backup I did the day before. Once this completed, I was able to upgrade from the phone (not via iTunes). Thank you for your assistance!

To update over the air from the phone all of these requirements must be met:

  • You need at least 6 GB of free storage
  • You must be connected to a Wi-Fi network (and not a personal hotspot)
  • The phone must be charged to at least 50%, and preferably plugged in so it stays above 50% during the update
  • The phone must not be in Low Power Mode
  • The phone must not be connected through VPN
  • The phone cannot be in Airplane mode
  • You cannot still have a beta version installed on the phone

If you can't meet all of them you can still update using your computer.

  • You need at least 6 GB of free storage - 24.1 of 32 GB used
  • You must be connected to a Wi-Fi network (and not a personal hotspot) - Personal Hotspot is Off
  • The phone must be charged to at least 50%, and preferably plugged in so it stays above 50% during the update - 70% and it is plugged into an ac charger
  • The phone must not be in Low Power Mode - Low Power Mode is Off
  • The phone must not be connected through VPN - not connected via VPN
  • The phone cannot be in Airplane mode - Airplane Mode is Off
  • You cannot still have a beta version installed on the phone - Current software version is 12.4.1

and if I go into settings on my iPhone 6s plus, and go to software update, it shows ios 15.3.1 is available. I can select download and install. That is successful. Then is goes into preparing update which is also successful. Then it starts installing (verifying update) and then fails with the error "Unable to Install Update, an error occurred installing IOS 15.3.1. I have the option to retry or Remind Me Later. i have tried numerous times and I get the same results.

I’m pretty much stumped. Desperate things to try:

Go to Settings/General/iPhone Storage and look for an iOS update file. If you find one, tap on it and delete it, then try again.

Go to Settings/General and look just below VPN. If you see an entry for Profiles open it, tap on a Beta profile (if there is one) and delete it, then restart the phone.

Also, just below VPN, look for Device Management, open it, and if you see a management profile, delete it.

Well, I think I have now totally killed my iPhone. I followed the instructions for putting it in DFU mode. While the procedure worked in that my iPhone appeared in iTunes. But when i select restore, I get an error in iTunes saying that in order to restore the iPhone, I need to upgrade to the latest iTunes version. Unfortunately, on my Windows 7 machine, I am running the highest version of iTunes permitted so i cannot upgrade iTunes to the version needed to restore my iPhone. So now my iPhone is totally dead.

and that is the version of iTunes I am running.

A rather bizarre thing happened (well, maybe not so bizarre) after I was able to get my phone out of the DFU mode. My iPhone started loading software and rebooted it took a long time and i was thinking it finally took the upgrade. It did not. It reloaded the version the same iOS it had been running, 12.4.1. After that completed, I again attempted to upgrade to 15.3.1. And again, it went through all the motions (taking a very long time) and when it finally rebooted, it was again on 12.4.1. So I am thinking, either this iPhone will not support 15.3.1 or I may need to borrow a pc running a newer iTunes release in order to successfully upgrade it.
