Extended monitor for macbook pro keeps trying to mirror my macbook display

My external monitor is bugging out. Its set as an extended display but it keeps trying to mirror the display for my macbook. Whenever I switch to another screen on my macbook, my monitor will switch screens too but it will be completely black though. Has anyone else faced this problem? Below is a sc of what my settings look like : My monitor is clearly set as an extended display but does not behave as one. All the windows that are open on my macbook will be open on my monitor as well in the mission control. However none of the windows are actually accessible on my monitor. I cant place any apps or windows on my monitor at all
