Alphabetize Tables - *not* the data in them

I've created a sort of library of song chord progressions in a single sheet. There are roughly 40 tables now.

The drop-down for the sheet containing these tables lists them in the order they were added.

Is there a way to have Numbers alphabetize this list?

Theoretically with 40 tables it would take at most 40 "Send to Back" commands or "Bring to Front" commands to get the order correct. If it is important, that isn't so bad (though it will probably take a few more clicks to correct mistakes).

  1. Select the first table (the one you want first alphabetically).
  2. Send to Back
  3. Select the next one
  4. Send to Back
  5. Continue until they are all in order. Don't worry if some are not quite right.
  6. Use Bring Forward or Send Backward to rearrange those you got wrong
  7. Arranging a newly added table is just a matter of counting how many positions it has to move and hitting the "send backward" or "move forward" button that many times.

That's a LOT of tables for one sheet!

The order is determined by for "front" or "back" the table is relative to the others. The table at the back is listed first. (Click a table and in the menu choose Arrange > Bring Forward or Send Backward and you will see that the order changes.

With that many tables, though, it would take a lot of Bringing Forward and Sending Backward to get them in the order you want.

In theory this could be done via a script, but I think that would end up being complicated.

You could put each table in its own sheet and then alphabetize the sheet order. That would require a somewhat less complicated script, but still not an easy solution.

You might be better off leaving the order as is and using search (command-f) to find the table you want to go to.
