Photos Keeps Unnaming a Group of Photos

Hi everyone,

Hoping someone can give me a solution to this because I’m one hair short of deleting my photos off my iOS devices and dumping them all elsewhere.

After my last iOS update, my Photos app started unnaming groups of photos of random named people (and therefore their photos) in my People list. There was no rhyme or reason - it just started happening right after the update.

The photos are all still there, they’re all correctly grouped together, but no matter what I do, I can’t permanently merge them with their correct name and I can’t permanently rename them either because after charging my device, the groups of photos become unnamed all over again.

To illustrate what I mean:

I have 50ish photos of John Doe. After the last update, 30ish of them lost their name and, for lack of a better description, became their own group of photos without a name.

At this point, I now have a group of 20ish pictures of John Doe and another unnamed group of 30ish pictures that should be John Doe’s and WAS named to John Doe, but now aren’t.

Aside from the group of 30 losing their John Doe name, nothing else seems out of the ordinary, so I merge the photo groups successfully… only to have the two groups separate again after I charge my device. I try renaming the group of 30 to something else… only to have the group lose its name after I charge my device.

So now I’m left with a group of 30 photos that were once correctly named to John Doe that can neither be permanently merged with John Doe nor permanently named as someone else. Additionally I have some photos that keep getting tagged to the wrong person no matter what I do and yes, this problem also happened after the last update.

Repeat this on a larger scale and with multiple people and that’s my problem.

Is there a way to fix this or is my only solution to delete all my photos and re-name everyone again?

Thanks in advance.

I might have fixed my problem, but I’m still open to advice and potential non-scorched earth solutions and sharing experiences.

Out of sheer frustration and with an afternoon and evening to spare, I ended up implementing a scorched-earth method which seems to have potentially solved my problem. Crossing my fingers it does because I’m really and truly out of options if this doesn’t permanently work.

Hypothesis: Some part of my People recognition algorithm went buggy after my last update. At the same time, the update also improved (supposedly) this same algorithm. As a result, some of the groups of photos of People whose photos were previously recognized got “stuck” in the old algorithm (or new?) and permanently splintered off and became unnamed.

To further support this hypothesis, my newer post-update iPhone didn’t / doesn’t have this same issue with the same photos and I don’t have iCloud enabled. Additionally, after implementing the solution below, I could see the newer recognition algorithm at work which I hadn’t seen before.

Solution: Scorch the earth by cleansing my iPad of the “old” People recognition algorithm that went buggy. Delete ALL the People photos from my iPad, AirDrop all the People photos in my iPhone into my iPad, and start all over again.
