Motion 5.6: How To Create 3D Split Depth Gifs/Videos

Hello one & all,

Is it possible to create 3D Split Depth Gifs/Videos in Motion 5 (see attached YouTube link) and if so how?

The 3D space is, first, a fiction. It is an optical illusion created by adding artificial spatial references:



This is the original greenscreen:


The finished version (for this particular demo) consists of two Keyed clones. One version is added over a background — the scene is trimmed to a "cutout", then the un-trimmed clone is played over the top. To enhance the "sense of 3D", I added a drop shadow to the top layer.


Motion does not export GIF, but you can use something like GIPHY Capture to convert your onscreen work to a GIF (as I did here).


Other than that, creating effective scenes will depend on your creativity.

fox_m thank you for your very helpful explanation, much appreciated. I've spent sometime trying to find out more about the effect without much luck! - I was beginning t o think I was either speaking a foreign language; people were reluctant to share their knowledge or it was just a little used effect. Thank you once again :)
