installing Monterey as upgrade from High Sierra, does it usually take all night and with a black screen?

I’m installing a MacOS upgrade from High Sierra to Monterey. It’s been hours since I started. For several hours, the installation bar was stuck on “less than 1minute remaining.” Now screen is dark. Is it still installing?

The leap from High Sierra, released September 25, 2017 to Monterey released Oct 25, 2022 has a great deal of changes to make on this computer.

Was FileVault enable on High Sierra and finished Decrypting the drive before applying the Monterey UpGrade ?

If after a reason length of time and still not progressing with the installation suggestion.

Power Down the computer by any means including the Power Button.

Disconnect any and all External Drives.

Suggest restarting in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts.

The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

The Safe Mode may or may not allow the upGrade process to complete.
