Safari tabs taking up too much memory on m1 iMac Monterey

For some reason Safari tabs keep taking up excessive memory. Not at all unusual to see tabs taking 1-2GB each. I have 16GB installed and Activity monitor is often in the yellow because of this with larger and larger swap files. Google Drive is another issue and I'm not sure what is going on there. The other day when I ran it and left it alone, it went to 70GB! I'm not sure how that is possible , but.... I had hoped maybe OS 12.3 would have fixed this issue, but nope. Just now Activity Monitor was showing 14GB of memory used and I forced quit Google Drive and memory dropped back to 9.74GB. So something screwy there.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Mark

It appears that Google Drive is using an enormous amount of RAM.

And, to make matters far worse, you have that awful thing called "cleanmymac", so you are shooting yourself in both proverbial feet...

You should uninstall cleanmymac (it is not just as simple as dragging to the trash, you have to follow their instructions).

Then you will probably need to do a clean install of the OS, since cmm could have already damaged your system.

Re: "So something screwy there"

And yet you contend CMM is causing no problems? This forum universally (as far as I can tell) encourages users to uninstall CMM because it does cause "screwy" things to happen.

It's your machine and you can do as you wish with it, it may not be the cause of your problems. But the vast amount of experience represented by the volunteers here don't like it or trust it. Just sayin'

After all, you can always reinstall it if you find it is of benefit to you.

I don't have any issues with CleanMyMac. I've used CleanMyMac for quite some time , even with other machines. It's Google Drive that has some sort of issue. Obviously my machine is running just fine despite it showing that enormous usage which just shows that it probably is not using that RAM at all. I'll probably send Google a note to see their explanation.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm working with Google on it. They think it's a glitch in their software but they are still investigating. (Looking at the Google forums, I am not alone with this issue). They said they would get back to me via email. We shall see. I hear things like that frequently (about CleanMyMac or other similar programs) causing issues, but I have experienced none. I've read many reviews from tech gurus I respect touting its benefits as well. I hear the same thing about Chrome all the time as well. My wife runs CleanMyMac on her 2018 27" iMac - no issues. Great program for uninstalling programs, clearing RAM, junk, etc.

Your mac, your call.

The very concept of "clearing RAM" shows how poorly they understand the OS (at best).

Ever since Mac OS X Mavericks (that is 10.9, several years now), any program that "clears RAM" is actively fighting the way the OS itself manages RAM - and in doing so is making your mac slower, if not crashing. If they peddle their wares as, among other "features", "clearing RAM", then they are either ignorant or ... .
