Why are multiple windows on iPad opening instead of tabs?

With the 15.3.1 update, or maybe just 15, I started seeing multiple open windows at the bottom of my screen every time I opened Safari. I didnt realize these were all open, I thought they were stored automatically in case I wanted to return to them. They've been slowing things down a lot. I just learned they're actually active, or semi-active, windows and how to get rid of them, but how do I prevent them from opening in the first place? I want all new searches and links to open in tabs, not windows. How do I do that?

I'm on an iPad 8.

Hello there Troyanos,

Thanks for posting here on the Apple Support Communities! This is a place where other Apple users can submit questions or respond to others to help lend a hand. Let's take a closer look as we do our best to provide some additional insight.

We understand you're seeing tabs in Safari for windows at the bottom of the screen. It looks like you're referring to what is described under the "View tabs that are open on your other devices" section here: Use tabs in Safari on iPad

This feature shouldn't slow down your device in any way. If you're experiencing slow performance, something else is likely wrong. We'd suggest starting with these steps here: About iOS performance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Otherwise, you'd want disable Continuity and Safari syncing features as described in that first resource.

We hope this helps get you pointed in the right direction.

Take care.
