Why does my Siri speaker tell me to ask from my iphone when I ask a question?

I'd suggest:

-go into the Home app on your iPhone, long press the HomePod button, scroll to the bottom, hit the gear/settings button, scroll down to a bd locate "Listen For Hey Siri", confirm that is enabled.

-I'd also confirm HomePod is connected to the internet.
