iPad Mini 6 tap to wake not working most of the time

When the iPad is asleep and I tap the screen (once) to wake it up, it will most likely not work. Usually a double tap does the trick, but sometimes it doesn't.

I've tried specific regions of the screen, light and firm taps, but the results are never consistent.

I have it wrapped an official smart folio.

Is anyone else having an issue with tap to wake?
