I have heard of malicious software being able to automatically download onto a computer without permission as soon as a website is opened.
I accidentally opened a website that could have been potentially malicious and I am wondering if this automatic installation is possible on a MAC. and if so how i could find it.

For malware yes possibly; viruses no. Generally malware requires you take some sort of action on the user's part; not sure if opening the website is that.

Even if it *downloaded* it generally can't *install* without your permission.
so it wouldnt be just as simple as looking at my downloads and application folder to see if there was anything there? it could have downloaded and be stored somewhere else?
