Often I'm trying to get a screen shot of the whole vertical height of the screen but when I do I always also capture of the Screen Shot menu that has appeared on the bottom of the screen. Is there any way of avoiding this? I can't see a way to move the menu to another part of the screen, nor a way to instruct the app not to include its own image. The screen capture apps on earlier OSs didn't create this problem.

You can use a keyboard shortcut to take a full screen or partial screen screenshot without opening the menu. To take a screenshot of the full screen, press command + shift + 3. To take a screenshot of part of the screen, press command + shift + 4 then select the portion of the screen you want to take a screenshot of.

I knew about the full screen "command + shift + 3" but not the other, which is really the one I need most, as more often than not it's not the whole screen you want to capture.
So thanks again. I can now forget the "Screen Shot" app and have in fact just removed it from the dock

There is very little reason to keep the Screenshot application on the Dock, anyway. You can launch it by pressing Command-Shift-5 at any time.
Also, there one very useful thing you can do with it that you can’t do with -3 or -4 shortcuts: you can set a 5- or 10 seconds timer, so it becomes easy to do a screenshot with a menu open or something else that requires you to be using your keyboard or trackpad at the time. It also lets do not just still captures but also video screen recordings.
