Forgive me if this is an ongoing discussion, but my 21.5" 2017 iMac won't update to Monterey. Up to this point, updating has been easy, and the the support sites say this iMac is eligible.
I have cleaned up my drive, but didn't need to. I have 900 GB available. I have restarted. I have even let the Software Update check for updates over night, in case it might be internet busy-ness.
I'm stumped; any ideas?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and click on Monterey; it's a full-version upgrade and won't appear in the Updates list. If you get a Mac App Store preview page, change the https at the beginning of its address to macappstore.
Catalina and newer won't run 32-bit software; download and use Go64 to scan for it. To look up other programs, click here.

See if it will update while in Safe Mode.
I am compatible, and ran Go64 with no hits on 32 bit programs. As before, downloading Monterey from your link results in the "checking for updates" to just run and run endlessly. No problem downloading anything before.
I entered that line in the terminal and it resulted in this: "Scanning for 12.3 installer" and it sat there for an hour.
I guess I will have to call a local repair place.
Maybe it's a network issue, though I can't imagine why. Everything else works okay, including a game I play.

Yes, I followed the steps on the Apple Support page. Attempts to download Monterey results in the "checking for updates" to just run and run endlessly.
You could try running this command in the Terminal…
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.3
