iPhone Can't Disable Screen Locking While Driving?

iPhone doesn’t seem to be capable of disabling auto screen locking while using navigation. Any ideas? "Driving" Focus doesn't affect screen locking. Is the only way to disable screen locking globally? If I enable Face ID will that work?

In addition, I would like to allow SMS notifications while driving. Focus doesn't seem to allow this?

In addition, when the screen does lock and I get a notification, I have to disable Driving Focus to view the notification.

The best solution so far is to enable Wifi hotspot and use my old Android device in the car for navigation.

iPhone 11, iOS 15

Not with Google Maps. Maybe you are forced to use Apple Maps for this feature to work?

Maybe Waze? Although Waze seems to go haywire every time I touch the screen.

For most people it’s not dangerous to view a SMS message while driving. Driving focus should only disable functions that require touching the phone.

Although I just updated to 15.4, so maybe this just broke given Apple’s propensity for intentionally breaking things in software upgrades.

When using Navigation, the phone stays open to provide you with a view of the screen. If you press and released the side button, the screen will lock temporarily until the next time you need to be notified of a change in your direction or other driving alert.

As far as Focus While Driving, the behavior that you describe is working like it is supposed to. You should not get SMS notifications, and you are not supposed to see the notification and read SMS while driving. That is why it behaves that way. To get your notifications, you would have to turn off Focus While Driving, since it appears it is preventing you from doing dangerous things. Focus While Driving, if configured correctly should send a message to people that text you that you are driving and will respond when you stop.

I don't use Google Maps, so I cannot tell you how their app operates, but they are the one that codes the app, not Apple. I tried Waze once and will never use it again. It takes over your phone and it is difficult to turn off.

It is dangerous, and for most people it is also illegal to do. Viewing an SMS requires you to open the phone, unless you are using CarPlay.
