2 Different Apple IDs w/same phone number

I had my phone associated with my two different apple id - in fact, I still do. Both of my iPads use Apple ID X, while my phone and laptop use AppleID Y.

And up until a couple of days ago my iMac (Late 2015) had Apple ID X and my phone number associated with it for iMessage, up until I moved my home directory to an external disk to free up space on my internal SSD running my OS.

So - why am I now getting this error that my number is associated with another appleID?

Why do I have two apple IDs? That's neither here nor there, the question is why was I able to do it before and now I'm not. So frustrating.

Thanks in advance for any help.

So, for the record. I did move back to my old home directory on my internal SSD. This is what I did...

From Settings, I simply changed from location from my external SSD to my internal SSD (where my old home directory was still located) and restarted.

After restarting, I got into the terminal and navigated to my user directory.

Then I used the command mv ./Documents ./Documents_Old followed by ln -s /Volumes/NewSSD/Users/MyDir/Documents /InternalSSD/Users/MyDir/

I did the same for my Downloads folder as well.

That seems to be working for me now.

Thank you so much. You all are great!!!

Hi HeWoreBlack,

While it depends on several factors, this could be expected behavior depending on which options were chosen, how your devices were setup, etc. To help with keeping things uncluttered and easy, this is the reason it's recommended to use only one Apple ID for all of your devices. This link may help with explaining how to Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime.

That being said, you mentioned moving a vital/sensitive part of your built-in storage, or did you only copy it? It's usually not recommended to move that folder.

You also mentioned you're seeing an error explaining that your number is associated with another Apple ID, but when does this occur exactly?

Cheers!

Thanks for replying, HeWoreBlack, and that additional info, it really helps! Yes, moving this folder back and just moving the contents of the Documents folder could help. Another idea would be to restore a Time Machine backup from before you made this move, and here is more info:

Thank you so much for your reply.

Let me start with my home directory relocation. I followed suggestions from this forum to move the home directory to a new location to an external SSD. I still have the original home directory on my internal SSD that I can revert to if necessary. What I used was CarbonCopyCloner to copy the data from one location to the other - it is one of the utilities that was recommended because it follows all of the symlinks and doesn't miss critical data in the home directory.

The error occurs when I add my phone number as another way for people to contact me via Settings. So I can use Messages and people receive it from my cell phone v. my @me.com or @icloud.com account.

Should I just move back to where I was at the beginning of the weekend and just relocate my documents folder (that really is the problem for my storage more than anything else.). As for the overall operation of things, everything else seems to be running just fine on my mac.

Thanks again, Bruno75!

Thanks very much. I'm a bit of a rebel, I only created a tarball of the documents folder (old unix guy here) because that is where all my "gold" lives - so I can't use Time Machine to recover to that state, however, as I mentioned, I can simply go back into settings and change the location of the home directory back to the original which hasn't changed.

I'll give that a go. Thank you very much.

Well, it looks like creating a link to my Documents folder on my external SSD gets blown away after a restart.

Today while recording an interview with a colleague, I launched Ecamm Live - and went through the entire hour long recording - only to find that a new Documents folder was created in my /User/UserName directory, deleting the link I had created previously.

Why does it do that? I'm running Catalina - I didn't think that kind of OS behavior wasn't until I got to Big Sur.

So now what I have done is left the hard folder inside /Users/UserName directory and linked to all of the directories from my external SSD.

For example, from my terminal window:

cd ~

ln -s /Volumes/SamsungSSD/Users/Me/Documents/Adobe ./

ln -s /Volumes/SamsungSSD/Users/Me/Documents/EcammLive ./

.

.

.

etc.

So now I have all of the files and directories originally in my Documents folder on my internal SSD living on my external SSD and linked back to the original location.

Will that work?
