Cannot open password protected PDF anymore after adding markup

I received a password protected PDF from a 3rd party. I was able to open it with the provided password in Preview. When I add a markup (text) to it, save and close (no password required for this), I am not able anymore to open the PDF with the original password.

What's going on? How does it just change the password and what to?

Using Preview Version 11.0 (1033.3) on macOS 12.2 (21D49) on a M1 Max MacBook

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.2

Preview is not 100% compatible with some pdf files that were created with other software.

Try opening the file with the latest version of Adobe Acrobat (there is a free version Adobe Acrobat Reader) and try your markups with that. Does that work?
