airpod max split audio and mic signal

How can I achieve splitting the microphone, and headphone signal through the lightning cable? I don't understand how the headphones only accept audio input but do not for microphone input through the 3.5mm cables where the technology has existed on the AirBuds for the last decade.

I purchased the 3.5mm jack to lightning for the AirPod Max, however, it only lets me direct Audio through the jack. It seems that MFi devices sold have issues supporting this - is that true?

It seems it's because there is a need for a Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) in the cable to 'split' the signals to microphone, and stereo signals? Not seeing any technology to support this. It's a shame because overall the Max seems to be phasing out.
