Siri in iOS 15.4 fails to make phone calls

Immediately after I updated my iPad and iPhone to iOS 15.4, Siri fails to make telephone calls. For example, when saying Hey Siri, call NAME (a name in my contacts) Siri starts the call but does not open the phone and the call fails. It does not happen to all contacts and, in fact, fails on not all phone numbers in a contact - some phone numbers in a contact will work with Siri while others in the same contact fail. This happens on multiplayer iPhones and multiple iPads. Any suggestions?

Great news regarding this issue: iOS and iPadOS 15.5 fixed the bug. Siri can now dial and make calls with * code prefixes.

I believe you are correct - I tested similar on my iPhone (iOS 15.4.1) and phone numbers with anything in front of them cause Siri to fail to dial (or more correctly, Siri thinks it is dealing but it just stops without any further infection of what went wrong). For example, and number that start with a '*' (such as '*31#', the standard prefix to allow your caller ID to show if it is normally not shown) will cause this problem as well. This all used to work fine before iOS 15.4 .

Hello BillMang,

If "Hey Siri" isn't working as expected, this link outlines some steps that may help: If "Hey Siri" isn't working on your iPhone or iPad

You mentioned that it only occurs with some phone numbers; do you receive a specific error when asking "Hey Siri" to call those numbers?

Are you able to call the affected phone numbers manually, without an issue? If you're unable to make calls or calls are failing, please check out this link for some additional steps that might help: If you can't make or receive calls on your iPhone

Thanks!

Let me join the chorus. I have the same exact issue. The issue is when I attempt to dial a number in my address book that starts with *67. "Hey Siri dial *67 555-555-5555" it recognizes that I want it to dial a phone number and the Siri message at the bottom of the phone comes up as if it is working, but then no call is placed and the Siri message bubble at the bottom just disappears (BTW, I copied and paste the description of the issue from helpmefixitplease

because it is obviously constant for us all). There are times we need call blocking and this MUST be fixed.

I have the same (similar) problem, with these specific symptoms: I say "Hey Siri, call ..." (something I've always done and do often). Siri icon appears and Siri responds (in text on the screen and by speaking "calling ..."), then a slight pause when the call would normally be made but instead nothing happens, no call is attempted and Siri simply goes away, as if the call command had never been given. This was not fixed in 15.4.1 either.

This is also very serious for my elderly mother, as she relies on Siri to call for help and reach family members - Apple needs to fix this broken feature urgently!!!

This is not happening with all calls. If I say "Hey Siri dial 555-555-5555" it works perfectly fine. If I say "Hey Siri dial *67 555-555-5555" it recognizes that I want it to dial a phone number and the Siri message at the bottom of the phone comes up as if it is working, but then no call is placed and the Siri message bubble at the bottom just disappears. This was never an issue before I updated to iOS 15.4. I have tried the troubleshooting that has been suggested so far but nothing has fixed it. This seems to clearly be a bug that was introduced with iOS 15.4, and it was not fixed with the 15.4.1 update.

Hello ~ I am asking questions because I am able to use this feature with no problems whatsoever and only mean to gather enough information in order to be helpful. Also in one of your posts to me me a fellow forum user you say ”Apple, are you listening?” Not here they are not. In order to provide feedback to Apple here is a link to do so:

There’s a basic problem with Siri command not being able to execute a phone call. Apple support people constantly direct us to things that are already written about how to get Siri activated, etc. Siri activation is not the problem, the glitch between Siri phone command and the phone itself is what the problem is. Please provide an answer to that specific thing and if there is no answer tell us you’re working on it!

I am having the same issue, especially when telling Siri to "dial *67...". I am able to have Siri dial other phone numbers without the *67. This was never an issue for me until I updated to iOS 15.4, and it was not fixed with the 15.4.1 update either. I tried all the troubleshooting suggestions from the link posted above by Brittany1416 with no luck. I need this fixed please. I have an iPhone 12 Pro, if that information is needed.

I, we all (I believe), appreciate help, so thanks for your efforts. As for my 'Apple, are you listening' remark, apple staff do sometimes monitor and reply to posts here; however, I never expect that, and my comment was more a general remark, tongue-in-cheek, related to apple's general responsiveness (or often lack thereof) to bug fixes, including important ones.

As for the proper way to provide feedback to apple, and report a bug, that was done long before I ever posted my first post here, including more details than I posted here, and at the same link you posted.

I am curious, when you say this feature works for you, I am guessing you are using phone numbers beginning with '*' or some other punctuation code, that are stored that way in your address book? Or is it something else?
