When does the warranty for my Apple product begin?

If I buy an Apple product such as an iPad or iPhone, when does the warranty begin?

I heard it's when you "register" it with Apple, but, if you register it later than the real date of purchase?. Also, how does this apply to grey market purchased product such as an iPad?

Any opinions much appreciated

wow! I was told it's when you register the device with your apple id, ie: when you begin using it. Thanks.

Whoever told you that is incorrect. I worked for an Authorized Apple Reseller (a major U.S. cellular carrier) and I can tell you that the warranty starts, as steadman1 and ProustGiulio have told you, on the day you purchased from Apple or the authorized reseller. No registration is required.

We've seen here on these forums, time and time again, people who are surprised when they buy something from eBay or Amazon that's still shrink-wrapped but has no warranty. Someone out there probably has an iPhone 4 untouched, never used, in a box. It's not still under warranty just because it has never been registered or used.

Hi, that doesn't seem to be the case. I just received an iPad and activated it (entered the Apple ID and set up) and checked the warranty in checkcoverage.apple.com it's exactly one year from today. In fact I purchased the iPad 8 days ago from a supposedly "black market" site (dimprice.co.uk, it took 8 days to arrive)..or maybe it's not a black market site, I'm not sure...Anyway: the Warranty seems to start when you activate the device.

The warranty period starts from the date of purchase.

If you buy an Apple device (iPhone or iPad) from official channels (Apple Online Store, Apple phisycal Store, Apple Authorized Resellers) Apple is automatically informed of your purchase.

If you do the same from other channels or gray market, I think that Apple is not informed of your purchase AND the warranty peroiod might have started when those "channels" bought the device from Apple directly, or from other authorized Resellers.

Giulio
