Greetings JLH52,
If there is an iCloud account showing in System Preferences > iCloud still while using the password is one way to resolve that there are others -
1. The account owner can remove the device from the account remotely and without having to disclose the password. They would follow the steps under the section, ‘Turn off Activation Lock on a device you no longer have’ Remove a device in Find My on Mac.
2. If that’s not an option and the issue is that the device has Activation Lock enabled, you can submit a request to Apple to have the Activation Lock removed. Here’s how to get started - How to remove Activation Lock. Note, you’ll need to have proof of purchase documentation to start the request.
Thanks.
