Airtag, Leave Behind Notification, except location did not work.

Leave Behind Notification, except location, did not work.

I set up 300 feet around the house, and according to Apple tutuorial, I would not get notigfication if I am around the inside that circle. So when I leave the virtual fence it should notify me, right? Wrong, it does not, even if I am miles away. What am I doing wrong?

I looked at my setting for the AirTag. I have set my AirTag, which is attached to the car keys, with 1 location exception and that is my HOME. I can be as far as I can be (different state) and I will not be notified. Here is where the misunderstanding is coming from. I will be Notified if my keys end up outside the set circle AND I am away from my set Address. I will not be notified if the Keys are inside the set circle AND I am away from the set address. So, in my experience, if my Keys and all of my other trackable Apple devices are within the set circle and I am away, then I will not be notified.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max. When my AirTag is left in the location marked as an exception, then no matter how far I travel (across states) I do not get the “left behind” notification. If I leave the AirTag outside of the virtual fence (circle) and move away from it, then I am notified.

I am not so sure about the “old iPhone” explanation. Are you talking to official Apple Support?

Double Check the following:

Notify when left behind ➡️ Except at 1 Location: Is this location set? Is this location set to your house? If the answer is YES then you will NOT be notified if you leave your device(s) behind at this location no matter how far you go.

If you move your device outside of house to another location (for example a hotel room) and leave that device behind, then you WILL be notified.

  1. How does iPhone know it's my house, I did set it up choosing a current location. And why there are small., medium, and large settings, if it does not matter where how far I go, as you mentioned.
  2. If I enter my business address and I am not there it gives me an error, see the screenshot.
  3. Do I need to be at that location in order to exclude it?

The iPhone does not know that it is your house unless it is listed as your home address in your contact card. In the end, it does not matter whether it is your house or not as long as the address is listed in the exception. If the location is listed in the exception list, then you are NOT going to be notified when left behind.

Yes, you can add an address without being at the location. What I am not sure about is why you are getting that error. Can you shutdown and restart your iPhone and try adding that other location to the exception list?

Thanks, Axel for trying to help, but you are a little wrong. Because the location exception will be the same as turning Notify Left Behind off. FYI, I spoke to the senior advisor and he agreed that I should be notified 3-4 minutes if I exit the set radius. That's why this feature was designed. For example, if you attach the AirTog to let's say your pet. So having a big yard,

#1, you would not be notified every time your dog is running around that 300ft radius circle (small setting)

#2. You would be notified if your dog runs out of the gate that is further than 300 ft

My issue was submitted to the developers and I am expecting a call next week, I will post the findings and possible solutions.

Cheers,

You might be correct, and In my opinion my idea is more useful. Like I mentioned about the losing your pet in my previous post.

There are hundreds other circumstances that my idea would be better. Here is another example, you set up except location to your wife purse while back. Then you drive 50 mi to the concert, when you get there you realize that your wife placed 2 concert tickets in her purse. Enjoy the concert, LOL!

Thanks, Axel,

I would call this idea VIRTUAL FENCE. Another suggestion is to have a variable time in the Leave Behind Setting. Right now it's fixed for 4-5 minutes. Let's say you went shopping while on vacation. I would set notify me in 45 sec. If I drop the wallet in one of the stores it would be much easier to find it, by the Find application showing me the direction with an arrow. Being 4-5 minutes away, I will be out of range.

As I promised I am back to share my talk with the senior advisor. He said that the developer team told him that the circle, virtual fence works only in iPhone 12 and later models. So... dear Axel, if you do have that iPhone release please check if it works on your end. I personally am skeptical, why is the model important, I am more inclined that iOS is the most important in an application issue. The conclusion of the developers:

1) the reason why I am not getting notified leaving the 300ft circle is that I have an older model iPhone. :o)

@Axel, here is the latest. I received a call from the senior advisor and he told me that we are right. The functionality of the application has nothing to do with the iPhone model, but it does with the Airtag application. He said that our idea to have the notified feature out of the circle, (virtual fence) is a great idea, and the developers would present it to the apple management to approve the modification in the next iOS update.

I also suggested adding a new feature like having to adjust the Leave Behind feature by distance, rather than the 4-5 minutes that it's set right now. This modification will make AirTag #1 compare to the competition.

He also thanked you and me for spending our time helping Apple with great ideas.

Airtag, Leave Behind Notification, except location did not work.
