Am I able to use non-Apple headphones with an adapter for calls?

I have an iPhone 12 I recently purchased. I don't want to use bluetooth headphones so I purchased an adapter so I can use headphones with a 3.5 mm plug. I can hear videos and music with the headphones, but the audio for calls does not come through the headphones. How can I fix this?

iPhone 12, iOS 15

I read reviews for my adapter and multiple ones said they had the same issue. I ordered a different adapter that had reviews indicating it worked for calls. Thanks!
