digital audio output optical not working

Hi all

I have a 2011 iMac A1312 unmodified I have replaced the graphics card , and also the logik board as I had no sound output all greyed out , for your information the logic board was damaged by something? as there were burnt out resistors /diodes , on the reverse side of the board along the edge of the board where the USB sockets are ,see attached photo, the only issue I have now is the audio is all working except the digital out SPDIFF , on plugging in the optical cable, the internal sound cuts out and the optical has a red light coming out the end of the optical lead, as one would expect, but it contains no audio , the lead has been tested using a mac mini no problem there. in settings sound is hi lighted and shows it working, nothing greyed out that should be , obversely no volume control, as is normal with digital, and I have done a new install, still same problem, has anyone had this before ?
