Time Machine turns off wrong monitor

Hello. I am using a MacAir M1 laptop with an external display. I use both displays, so not in clamshell mode. Restoring from time machine used to work well. Since the last update (Monterey 12.3) time machine has developed a "quirk". Instead of shutting off the external monitor and displaying the time machine finder window on the laptop, it places the finder window onto the laptop display but shuts off the laptop display and keeps the external display on. If I initiate clamshell mode and enter time machine on the external monitor, all works well. If I open the clamshell while in time machine, the finder window moves to the laptop display and the laptop screen goes black while the external screen remains active.

This scenario also happens in safe mode so no resident programs are conflicting with time machine. I was wondering if anybody else has experienced this or something similar. Does anybody have any thoughts???

Trece1, thank you for replying.

As I discovered the Display section within settings is copied if there is an existing user. I previously did make a minor change from the default settings when i first purchased this MacAir. That minor change appeared in the Display settings within the new user I created today.

I also already tried removing all login items as you described, no luck. Keep in mind this problem exists within Safe Mode where no login items or third party apps are loaded.

I also discovered that TM restore works just fine when I disable the 'Displays have separate Spaces' checkbox within the Mission Control setting. However that mode limitations when the external display is full screen.

Update...I ended up creating a new user with admin privileges and transferring all user files to the new user account. Warning, be aware that most instruction you will find regarding moving Mail accounts is outdated. There are a couple of folders and several plist files that you need to copy. See the apple_mikey post reply at Manual Mail Migration - Apple Community . Not all the plist files listed are used on my M1 but I copied what was found. I also suggest you do not copy the Keychain folder as many suggest. This caused me a world of password hurt to the point I had to start again. Backup Keychain to iCloud via the AppleID settings in System Preferences, your new account will access your Keychain from there. That is it...happy computing.

Hello rjm2020,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Great troubleshooting so far. You can isolate this further by testing another cable or adapter if available.

If this happens with multiple connections or you do not have others to test, resetting the NVRAM and SMC may help. This can rule out power-related issues or things like display resolution. Articles below can walk you through each process.

Have a great day!

rjm2020,

Thank you for keeping us posted.

Have you had the chance to check if the issue persists when signed in on a different user account?

The article below can help if you do not have any other user account to test with.

As my post indicated I have an M1 MacAir. NVRAM and PRAM reset do not apply. SMC reset only involves a restart (done). Re-installing the OS - done. All cables are new and rated for usb-c and HTML. All was well before the latest update (to Monterey 12.3). After update is when the issue came up. Keep in mind...backing up works fine. Going into Time Machine does happen, it is just that the wrong monitor is shut off. When entering time machine using dual monitors, the external monitor should shut off and the finder window is placed onto the laptop screen. But, in my case, the finder window is placed on the laptop screen then the laptop screen goes black and the external monitor remains on. Unplugging the ext monitor will turn the laptop screen on with the time machine finder window displayed. I have texted and spoken to apple support to no avail. They are at a loss.

Thank you, kamote0628, for your suggestion. I created a new user and behold...all worked well. Now comes the daunting task of determining what is wrong with my user setup. I already tried deleting my login apps. I also tried restarting into safe mode which is a very basic operating mode.

If you have any suggestions on how to proceed, I would be grateful.

Thanks.

Hello rjm2020,

Since the issue doesn't occur in a test user account, this definitely indicates the issue is within your specific user account. For example, this could be a setting/preference that needs to be changed. Check your display settings to see if they match the settings in the new user account:

Change Displays preferences on Mac

Make sure these are the steps you took to remove your login items and have restarted the MacBook since removing these items. Also, make sure when you shut down your Mac, you uncheck the option that says "Reopen windows when logging back in".

Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac
Login items are apps that open automatically when you start up or log in to your Mac. Occasionally, a login item may cause a blank blue screen at startup or other problems. You can test your login items to see if any are causing startup issues on your Mac.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .

2. Click your account name below Current User, then click Login Items at the top of the window.

Make a list of the login items—you’ll need to remember them later.

3. Select all of the login items, then click the Remove button

4. Choose Apple menu > Restart.

If this solves the problem, open Users & Groups preferences again, add the login items one at a time, and restart your Mac after adding each one.

When the problem occurs again, follow the steps above to remove only the last login item you added.

If the issue persists, we recommend reaching back out to Apple Support here:
