Why can’t I see from the in-line replies the message that my friend is responding to? It just comes out blank. They can see which message I am replying to but I can’t see theirs. Is it something I need to fix on my end or on their side?

The best way to test this is to get an inline response from another contact. If that works then your side is probably good. If the same thing happens with all contacts who send you inline responses then the issue is with your iPhone.
