IPad Pro (12.9” / 5th Gen) 15.4 - Safari randomly reloads current page and clears history (back button becomes grey)

When browsing in Safari, webpages randomly reload and Safari resets, deleting previous pages I’ve been browsing. The back button becomes greyed out, deleting previous pages.

This started happening with the 15.4 update. I’ve cleared website data, but behavior persists. Any recommendations?

Hi JoeJoe1970,

Do you find this is happening when you visit a specific site?

Are you using any content blockers?

"Content blockers are third-party apps and extensions that let Safari block cookies, images, resources, pop-ups, and other content.

To get a content blocker:

  1. Download a content blocking app from the App Store.
  2. Tap Settings > Safari > Extensions.
  3. Tap to turn on a listed content blocker.

You can use more than one content blocker. If you need help, contact the app developer."

As discussed within, Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If so, you may need to remove the blockers.

Cheers!

OK. Thanks for letting us know JoeJoe1970.

Let's test this issue further. Next, we'll have you completely force quit the Safari app, restart your iPad, then test using it again. This will allow the Safari app to load from a fresh state.

To quit an app, open the App Switcher, then swipe up on the app.

You can do this one of two ways. On iPads with a Home button, double-click the Home button. On iPads without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause in the center of the screen.

If after completing those steps Safari is still behaving the same, we'd like you to test using a different web browsing app entirely. Any third-party web browsing app will work. The goal is to narrow down the issue specifically to Safari.

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards.

Thank you Karina184. The issue seems to be with AdGuard - a content blocker I have had on my iPad. Looking at their help pages revealed that it is necessary to “refresh” AdGuard and begin disabling extensions one by one to find which one is causing this behavior in Safari. For me it was the AdGuard Security extension that was causing the auto reload and clearing of history. I disabled it and now Safari is working as expected. Thanks for your help!
