Periodic stuttering when playing video from Mac to Apple TV

This may be a system bug.

I stream an mp4 from Quicktime Player (10.5) on my Mac (2022 M1 14" MBP OS 12.3) to my Apple TV (4K running OS 15.4). Using the Apple TV as an 'added display.' Every 44 seconds (exactly) the video and audio both stutter or judder (about 2x per second) for exactly 14 seconds, then normal play resumes for another 44 seconds. Cycle is exactly one minute. This is a BIG PROBLEM because I use Powerpoint with embedded videos projected on Apple TV professionally.

I get the same result irrespective of the Mac app I use to play the video (Quicktime Player, Camtasia, Apple Music, Powerpoint in presenter Mode...) irrespective of the media content (audio/video) irrespective of various display settings. I did not get this problem until a few days ago (something to do with the Mac OS 12.3 upgrade??). I do not get this problem with the same MBP connected to a desktop LG display monitor. And my wife's MBP (2022 M1 16" OS 12.3--almost identical machine!) does not encounter the problem when configured exactly as above.

What on earth is going on? Can anyone help?

Hello Liuprand,

It sounds like you're having audio and video issues when using your Apple TV as an extended display for your Mac. You've done quite a bit of troubleshooting already, but let's have you test the issue in another user account on your Mac. This allows us to rule out any account-specific issues. If you don't have another user set up on your Mac, you can create a test user:

Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
2. Click the lock icon  to unlock it.
3. Enter an administrator name and password.
4. Click the Add button  below the list of users.
5. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user. In this case, you'll want to choose Administrator.

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Let us know if the issue continues in the other account.

Take care.

Hello Melissa

Thank you for the suggestion. I set up a TEST account as you suggested and get exactly the same problem: a piece of music in my Music Library, which plays perfectly on my laptop standalone, stutters when played through my Apple TV system.

Just one idea that came to me since my original post: the problem seems to date from the installation of OS 12.3 (but not on my wife's almost-identical MBP also running 12.3). Is it possible that I have software running in the background (on just my MBP) that is malfunctioning under 12.3? I run Dropbox, and they have indicated that "Dropbox is actively working on full support for macOS 12.3 (Monterey) and higher" https://help.dropbox.com/installs-integrations/desktop/macos-12-monterey-support. If so, how should I test that?

Hello Dak_Kol: Sorry to her about your problem.

I regret to report that my previous message--that the problem was solved by simultaneously rebooting everything (Mac, Router, Apple TV)--was premature. A few days later the problem recurred. I have given up on finding a solution and simply use my wife's MBP (also M1/Monterrey) when I need to connect to the Apple TV. I think it must be some background function running on my MBP but not on my wife's. But I have no idea what it is...
