MacBook Pro Safari V 14.1.2 (14611.3.10.1.7) Live Video Displays Black Screen with Audio

Hello,

I am a Mac user since the ][-C days. I have a MacBook Pro13,3 running 10.14.6 (I have some 32-bit apps I need for work) but when I tried to pull up the March Madness® feed to surf a few games last Friday, I could hear them, but the screen was black. The feeds worked fine in Chrome, so I chalked it up to yet another Intarweb Safari incompatibility and watched it on Chrome. Today I was on the Showtime+ streaming site and discovered the live East/West streams had the same issue, while on-demand content works fine.

I have no issues with YouTube videos (I do not use the live TV feature) or other on-demand streaming services. I can watch live feeds powered by Akamai (Fox, MSNBC, CNN, local TV). I could not determine what powered NCAA and Showtime live video, but I do not think it is Akamai.

I have cleared the cache, tried switching between tabs or applications and back to the live video and running all of the user agents available in the developer menu. I am not advanced enough to troubleshoot corrupt system files. There is little to be found in forums about the issue and I did not see any threads that noted live feeds as the specific issue. From what I have read, it seems the latest Safari patch might be the culprit. However, I cannot say, as I have not tried to view live video in quite some time.

I hope this is helpful and not too long. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Hi

Do you have any extensions installed in Safari? If so, does the issue continue with them disabled or temporarily uninstalled?

"How to turn off or uninstall extensions

Choose Safari > Preferences, then click Extensions.

  • To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.
  • To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button. If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it."

The article here also has the information above: How to install Safari extensions on your Mac

We'd also recommend checking the requirements for live streaming for both. CBS does recommend to ensure any pop-up blockers are disabled.

What are the minimum system requirements for CBS?

What are the system requirements for the SHOWTIME streaming service?

We'd also recommend checking to make sure your privacy settings and cookies are allowed for these websites: Manage cookies and website data in Safari on Mac

If the issue continues, follow the remaining steps here: If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected

Cheers!
