Every time I turn on my mac the message application keep open automatically how to stop that?

i messages has stopped working properly on my iMac. it stays on an old message from about 4 years ago and the icon in the system tray shows 4 unopened messages which don't really exist - how can i re set this i messages has stopped working properly on my MacBook and instead of showing new / current messages it has decided to stick n a message from about 4 years ago. the icon in the system tray also indicates that there are 4 unopened messages which don't really exist. how can i reset this?

The Messages app opens whenever I boot up my iMac Suddenly messages is open whenever I boot up my iMac, although I close all applications before I shut it down. And is it normal to have to keep signing in to icloud.com? [Re-Titled by Moderator]

Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac.
