International text / dial assist issue

I live in Berlin, originally from the US, but living here for months and bought a new iPhone 13 here in Berlin.

I have dial assist turned on.

I have gone through my Contacts and have added + and the country code to all my (necessary & important) contacts.

Here is my issue and example.

Melissa is in my contacts. She has a Berlin number and it’s in my phone with +49. I can call normally and send texts no problem.

…but when I try to share a link or send a message when I am declining her call, my iPhone adds the 011 in front of her phone and the message fails. It’s like the Dial Assist doesn’t recognize when you use an app that isn’t Phone or Messages.

Any thoughts or help?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Which country or region is your iPhone set up to? UAS or Berlin? We're asking as this issue may happen if the region is not set up correctly on your iPhone.

Change the language and region on iPhone

If the region is correctly set up, try changing to a different region, restart your iPhone, then switch back to your current region.

Hi stevenfromlos angeles,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! Does this happen if dial assist is disabled? You can test this by going to Settings > Phone > Dial Assist.

Since noticing this issue has your iPhone been restarted? You can perform this by pressing and holding a volume button and the side button until the power off slider appears. Once powered off, wait about 30 seconds and power it back on. Once back in you can test to see if this continues to occur.

Restart your iPhone

You should also confirm there are no updates that need to be installed for your iPhone 13. The latest is iOS 15.4. You can install any available updates by going to Settings > general > Software Update.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

It's hit and miss when I turn off Dial Assist. Some people still have the issue, some people it works.

The real issue is the iPhone not recognizing when a number is already accounting for the international country code (adding a + and the country code) - it recognizes it when using the phone app, but not using a linked app (like sending a photo from the photos app).

As for the message when I declined the call - think you misunderstood the issue. It wasn't declining the call, it was trying to send a text from the phone app that didn't work. Same issue as highlighted above.

Yes, I will likely need to call Apple be told this is an issue they are aware of and that "they are working on it"

Was hoping to catch a unicorn on the support group but alas - thanks for the look and offers

Thanks for asking the questions.

ios is up to date - 15.4

phone has been restarted many times

turning Dial Assist off does not help with this particular issue.

Sadly the easy answers aren’t the solve on this one.

According to this article: Make a call on iPhone - Apple Support

Turn on Dial Assist for international calls: (GSM) When Dial Assist is turned on, iPhone automatically adds the correct international or local prefix when you call your contacts and favorites.

If you remove the prefix from your contacts and with Dial Assist on, does it still fail with the 011?

Also, note: Answer or decline incoming calls on iPhone - Apple Support

In some countries or regions, declined calls are disconnected without being sent to voicemail.

Confirm whether or not this is the case and it's also suggested to contact your carrier for international calls/details.

If this doesn't help, we recommend at this point, contacting Apple Support directly for further help on this issue.
