How do I backup my iPhone 7 to a MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro (2019) and I need to back up our older iPhone 7 Plus to it. I plugged in the the phone but nothing happens. I tried to install iTunes but since I have Monterey on it, it kept saying I needed an older version to download iTunes. What can I do?
