Adding +1 to a contact when I text

This was answered back in 2019, but none of the responses were able to fix my problem. Both my husband and I got a new iPhone in January 2022. Since then both of us get +1 added to numbers we text. These numbers do not have +1 on the contact listing.

Further information: this only happens when we text to people in the area code where we live. Neither of us have phone numbers with that area code. Makes it impossible to text them! And Heaven forbid I actually have to talk to someone on the phone!

Thanks!

Hello pattipew,

Try checking the current region for the device and Apple ID. The device's region can be found in Settings > General > Language & Region > Region. +1 is the international call prefix for the U.S. If you're in the U.S., and the device's region shows as being set to the U.S., try switching it temporarily to a different one here. Then, restart the device and switch back as normal.

Also, check if you have Dial Assist enabled. This feature helps to automatically determine the correct intentional or local prefix. You can find this in Settings > Phone > Dial Assist. If it's enabled, try disabling it temporarily, and then see if it still adds the '+1'.

Cheers.

..pattipew:

Be sure to update the numbers within Contacts apps in

iOS; and macOS too. iPhones can negotiate the +1

automatic & adequately.. [While macOS, maybe not.]

Where the difficulty is, when your call cannot go through

if you've added the +1 before local area code. A recording

then tells you - it wasn't necessary to add +1 or +0 !!

Those local # require re-dial & won't work automatically.

Unless on iPhone; all numbers were updated, to add +1.
