Start with this of M1 Mac...
Start up a Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds.
Press and hold the power button on your Mac until the startup options window appears showing available startup disks and Options.
Select a startup disk.
Press and hold the Shift key, click Continue in Safe Mode, then release the Shift key.
To leave safe mode, restart your Mac normally, without pressing and holding any keys during startup.
Start with this if IntelMac...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Thank you for this trove to download!
What I finally did was restart the computer an ancient way -
PR, option, command. The imac didn't respond like back in
ancient times, however, I can now click on the images and
they come up smooth, and can also easily drag images from
mail to desktop. So whatever happened cleared up the present
glitches.
I greatly appreciate your help, and have started trashing old files.
Can you do it in the Finder to other places?
If you double click on it does it open?
Thanks greatly!
I didn't quite follow you, but immediately after rebooting the iMac, held the shift key down,
and now can move a copy from mail to the desktop.
What is weird is that now when I click on a desktop image it lurches to less than full size at first,
then lurches again a little larger, then finally lurches to full size.
Normally when you click on it, it quickly smoothly scales to full size.
It's not a real problem, but just looks a bit glitchy.
Maybe Apple should work on this.
How much free space do you have on your hard drive?
I wouldn't let it get too much lower.
Many SW will make things worse, most trustworthy I've found so far is...
Nektony | Best Mac Cleaning Software
Monterey Cache Cleaner - Maintenance & Antivirus Utility for Mac OS X (northernsoftworks.com)
Yes, it opens when I double click on it, but the only way I can actually move a copy
to another location is via the menu.
I can no longer click and drag.
Capacity: 250 GB;
Available 89.3 GB
Should I start deleting?
Also, I've never done any kind of clean up.
Is there anything I should be doing to keep things optimal?
Some kind of software?
Thanks!
Great to hear, good work, take care my friend! :)
