I've had to re-import all my photos to a new laptop from backup - but now my "imported" photos list is HUGE - and keeps showing painful photos from previous marriage that I don't want to see. Is there anyway to clear the imported photos list?

You could move the photos you do not want to see right now to a different Photos Library. You can have several photos Libraries. Just keep the photos you want to be able to access from other applications and to sync with iCloud to your other devices in your main System Photos Library. And archive the photos you do not want to see right now in a different library.

No. Imported is just a different view of your album.
You can hide pictures, which will then only appear in your hidden album, or delete them.
But if you hide the individual images you don't want to see, they won't be shown in imported either.
