how do I download my messages to my laptop. icloud says most of my space is taken up with messages but I don't even see an icon for messages. I want to download what is there and then not have any go there anymore.

If you are using iCloud Messages, if you delete a message on one device, it deletes it everywhere, and they cannot be recovered if you are using iCloud Messages. So be careful how you do this. If you need to restore more iCloud space, only delete messages you no longer wish to access.

Is not possible, Apple's Messages app works only on Apple devices like Macs, iPhones, and iPads.
May be there is a 3rd party app (not sure).
You can download your messages to a PC with TouchCopy or iMazing. You can’t do anything with them there except read them, however.
