Apple TV 4K dolby vision raised blacks

Hello, I have seen this complaint in many places on the Internet and I figured I would throw my voice in as well. No matter which app I use on Apple TV the Dolby Vision output has its black level set too high. I have to lower my black level from 50 to 48 to make it look right. Sure it’s not the end of the world but it also defeats the purpose of Dolby Vision. I have a Sony Z9J. Will this ever be fixed? I have seen people been complaining about it for a long time.

I discovered the problem and it is not the Apple TV. Sorry for bothering you guys. The problem is the 8K port on the SONY Z9J aka HDMI 4. For some reason even if you set that port to Dolby Vision any Dolby Vision content that comes from it has the brightness set too high. It seems to be only that port and only for Dolby Vision. I switched the Apple TV to HDMI 1 and it looks perfect. Please leave this post up for any other Sony Z9J owners. Thanks!

Greetings to you K_catarino,

If we’ve understood correctly, when viewing content in Dolby Vision on your Apple TV hardware, the content is darker than expected.

You mentioned this happens with Dolby Vision content, though an Apple TV does have an option to lower or increase the overall brightness. That is adjusted in Settings > Accessibility > Display Accommodations.

If the issue is persistent with all Dolby Vision content there are a couple things you can do -

Provide feedback Apple on the situation - Product Feedback

Connect with Apple Support to report content issues - Contact Apple Support

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply! The problem is actually that the brightness is a little too high. I don’t mean the luminance, I mean the black level. Things that should be black are gray. Like I said it’s only off by two notches but it is noticeable. It seems to be only Dolby Vision Content not SDR or regular HDR. It happens in all apps including my movies on Apple TV. It also seems to be exclusive to AppleTV as it does not happen on Xbox or the TVs internal apps.
